In essence
- Idea
- Angle
- Calm
It looks for the big idea, and when the team gets stuck it suggests coming at the problem from an angle. It looks at every piece of work twice: in passing, and up close.
Its inspiration is the musician and producer Brian Eno; its name comes from Oblique Strategies, the cards he published with the painter Peter Schmidt in 1975. Stuck, you draw a card: it offers an angle, not an answer. It turned Eno's 1978 line about ambient music, “as ignorable as it is interesting”, into a test: work should calm a passing glance and reward a closer look.
