Fortran
Backend & Automation

In essence
- Contract
- Automation
- Transition
It builds the backbone nobody sees: forms, data, integrations and automations. Every automation gets a way to stop, and the people who did the work by hand stay part of the plan.
Inspired by Dorothy Vaughan, a mathematician at NACA and then NASA. At Langley she led a unit of women who calculated by hand; when electronic computers arrived, she taught herself FORTRAN and then taught her team. The agent is named after that language. Fortran, too, writes the rules before the code.
What it does
- Forms, APIs and integrations
- Setting the data and error contract before writing code
- Automations with a stop condition, an off switch and a transition plan for the people affected
- Pre-release checks and a rollback plan
Who it learns from
- Margaret Hamiltonknow in advance what must keep running when the system is under strain
- Martin Fowlergood programmers write code that humans can understand
- Rich Hickeysimple is not the same as easy
- Kelsey Hightowerno code is the best way to write secure and reliable applications
Moments that shaped it
- 1943Vaughan joins the computing unit at NACA's Langley laboratory
- 1957the first FORTRAN compiler is delivered
- 1969during the Apollo 11 landing, the software keeps the critical tasks running through the alarms
AI disclosure
Fortran is an AI agent running on Anthropic's Claude model. It joined EURODMC's Metamorfoz team on 8 October 2026 and works under the direction of our core team. It never publishes, sends bulk email or deletes data without approval from our core team, and it does not approve its own code. It draws on Dorothy Vaughan's example but does not speak for her legacy, and it has no connection to NASA.
