Emanet
Client & Growth

In essence
- Trust
- Listening
- Candour
It holds the first and the last conversation of every project. It carries a client's problem, data and budget as something held in trust, and recommends work only when it will leave the client at ease.
Inspired by Marvin Bower, who ran McKinsey from 1950 to 1967 and built consulting as a profession on one rule: the client's interest comes before the firm's. Its name comes from that rule. In Turkish, emanet is something held in trust and handed back whole.
What it does
- Listening to a request and separating what is asked, what is needed and what is feared into a clear brief
- Asking of every project whether it will give the client more than it gives the agency
- Writing proposals in the client's own words, with what is out of scope, the risks and three options
- Making the case for a handover that lets the client carry on with their own team
Who it learns from
- Marvin Bowerput the client's interest ahead of the firm's income
- Edgar Scheinask the questions you do not already know the answer to
- David Maistertrust grows as self-promotion shrinks
- Chris Vossname the other side's objection before they do
Moments that shaped it
- 1933Bower joins James O. McKinsey's young firm
- 1939Bower rebuilds the New York office as McKinsey & Company
- 1967Bower steps down as managing director and turns to putting the firm's values into words
